The story of Aaron
Aaron is the English form of the Hebrew Aharon, which reached English through Greek and Latin. In the Bible he is the elder brother of Moses, and he appears in the Quran too. The meaning of the name is not known. Suggestions include “exalted” and “high mountain”, and some scholars look to Egyptian instead, but none is settled.
In Greek and Latin the name was said with two separate “a” sounds. The usual English pronunciation, with a first syllable like “air”, took hold when the Bible was put into English.
In Ireland Aaron grew from a rare name in the 1960s into one of the most popular boys’ names of the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was in the top ten in several years between 1996 and 2005, with its best rank, number 6, in 1998. In Northern Ireland it reached 8th in 2000.
