The story of Aimee
Aimee comes from the French Aimée, meaning “loved”, from aimer, to love. The masculine form is Aimé. Amy is the English form of the same name, and in English-speaking countries the French accent is usually dropped.
Aimee first appears in the CSO records in 1977. It rose through the 1980s and 1990s and was a firm favourite in the 2000s. It reached number 46 in 2005, and its biggest year was 2009, with 152 girls. It was even more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 9 in 2004.
Since then it has fallen away quickly, and only three girls were named Aimee in 2025. The CSO counts Aimee and Aimée separately, but the accented spelling has always been rare.
