The story of Brooklyn
Brooklyn is best known as a borough of New York City. Dutch settlers named it after Breukelen, a town in the Netherlands, and that name comes from the Dutch word broek, meaning marshy ground. As a first name it is often understood differently: as Brook or Brooke with the ending -lyn, which is found in many modern names.
It is a modern name, used for both sexes. Brooklyn Beckham, eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham, is the best-known male bearer.
In Ireland it has gone more often to boys, but girls have been given it too. It first appears in the CSO records for girls in 1999 and for boys in 2000. The boys’ best year was 2008, with 18 babies. For girls, the best year was 2017, with 11. Numbers have eased off since, and in 2025 there were 5 boys and 3 girls.
