The story of Clodagh
Clodagh is a place name turned first name. The usual account is that Lady Clodagh Anson, a daughter of the 5th Marquess of Waterford, was named after the River Clodiagh, which runs through the family estate at Curraghmore in County Waterford. She later gave the name to her own daughter. The river rises in the Comeragh Mountains and joins the Suir near Portlaw. The meaning of the river’s name is not clear, and there is also a River Clodagh in County Cork.
The name spread in Ireland from there, but it is still little used elsewhere. Well-known bearers include the singer Clodagh Rodgers, from Northern Ireland, and the chef Clodagh McKenna.
Clodagh was already given to 25 girls in 1964, and it has stayed popular ever since. Its best year came in 2009 with 224 babies, when it was number 34. In Northern Ireland it reached its best of 20th in 2024.
