The story of Conn
Conn is an old Irish name, and its origin is uncertain. It may be related to the Old Irish cond or to cenn, a word for head, but neither explanation is settled. It is related to the name Conall.
Its most famous bearer is Conn Cétchathach, Conn of the Hundred Battles, a half-legendary High King of Ireland. The northern half of Ireland was long called Leth Cuinn, read as “Conn’s half”, though it probably first meant “the chief’s half”. The Waterford town of Cappoquin has the Irish name Ceapach Choinn, which means Conn’s tillage plot.
Conn first appears in the CSO records in 1970. It peaked in 2021, with 35 babies, and reached number 149 in 2024, its best rank so far. In 2025, 30 boys were named Conn. It is doing well in Northern Ireland too, where it was number 90 in 2025.
