The story of Filip
Filip is the form of Philip used in Polish, Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Serbian and several other European languages, including the Scandinavian ones. Philip comes from the Greek Philippos, built from words meaning “loving” and “horse”, so it is usually explained as “fond of horses”. The Apostle Philip made the name familiar across Christian Europe.
In Ireland its story is recent. Filip first appears in the CSO records in 2003. That lines up with the years when many families from Poland and other central European countries came to live in Ireland, and the name rose quickly after that.
Its best year was 2010, when 113 boys were named Filip and it reached number 71. It has fallen back since, with 10 boys in 2025. The CSO counts Filip and Philip as separate names, so Philip has its own page.
