The story of Gearóid
Gearóid is the Irish form of Gerard. The Normans brought the name to Ireland, and it came into Irish from the Old French Gerart, which goes back to a Germanic name. It was especially at home among the Norman families who settled here and took up the Irish language, such as the FitzGeralds.
The best-known early bearer is Gearóid Iarla, Gerald FitzGerald, the third Earl of Desmond. He lived in the 14th century and wrote poetry in Irish, and later folklore turned him into a figure who sleeps under Lough Gur until he is called back.
Gearóid was given throughout the CSO records and was most popular in the 1980s and early 1990s. Its best rank was number 100 in 1988, and it had most babies in 1993, with 51. The CSO recorded no fadas before 2018, so earlier babies are listed as Gearoid. In 2025, all 19 boys were registered as Gearóid.
