The story of Georgia
Georgia is the feminine form of George, which comes from the Greek word for a farmer, literally someone who works the earth. The name shares its spelling with the American state, named after King George II, and with the country in the Caucasus, though the country’s name has a separate origin.
Georgie is the usual pet form, and Georgina is a longer sister name built the same way.
In Ireland Georgia first reached the CSO list in 1989. It has stayed between 80th and 150th every year since 1998, and its best year was 2017, when 77 girls got the name and it reached number 80. It has done better in Northern Ireland, reaching 29th in 2016. In 2025, 53 girls were named Georgia in the Republic.
