The story of Jade
Jade is named after the green stone. The word came into English through French from the Spanish piedra de la ijada, “stone of the flank”, because the stone was once believed to ease pains in the side. Jade has been prized for thousands of years in China, where it was carved into jewellery and ornaments. As a first name it came into general use in the 1970s, alongside other gem names like Amber and Ruby.
In Ireland Jade first appears in the CSO records in 1974. It grew through the 1980s and 1990s, and in both 2000 and 2001 there were 175 baby girls named Jade. Its best rank was number 30 in 2001. The name was just as popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 28 in 2001.
It has fallen back since, with 11 girls named Jade in 2025.
