The story of Julie
Julie is the French form of Julia, the feminine of the old Roman family name Julius. Where Julius itself comes from is not settled. One old idea links it to a Greek word for downy or soft-haired, another to Jove, the chief Roman god. English speakers borrowed Julie from French, and it became a common name in its own right during the second half of the twentieth century.
In Ireland Julie was already in use when the CSO records begin, but it really belongs to the 1970s and 1980s. It reached number 51 in 1977, and its biggest year was 1978, when 182 baby girls were named Julie. It has grown quieter since, with 7 girls in 2025. In Northern Ireland it has always been less common, and its best rank there was number 112 in 1998.
