The story of Mia

Mia started out as a pet form of Maria in Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands. It has also been used as a short form of names such as Amelia and Emilia. It was rarely given as a name on its own before the 1900s.

Mia first appears in the CSO records in 1971, with three girls, but it only really arrived around 2000. It reached number 6 in 2012, its biggest year, when 446 girls were named Mia, and it has stayed in or close to the top ten since. The CSO counts Mía, with a fada, as a separate name; only nine girls in all have been registered with that spelling.

It is less common in Northern Ireland, where its best rank was 14th, in 2015.
