The story of Natalie
Natalie comes from the Latin natalis dies, a birthday, used in the Church for the birthday of Christ, Christmas Day. Natalia was an early saint’s name, and English speakers got Natalie from its French form. It is related in meaning to Noel and Noelle, and Natasha began as a Russian pet form of the same name.
In Ireland Natalie was already in use when the CSO records begin, and it grew through the 1970s and 1980s. Its busiest year was 1982, with 94 girls, but its best rank came a decade later, number 76 in 1992. It has been a quieter choice since, with 10 girls in 2025. It was slightly more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 66 in 1997. The CSO counts Nathalie and Natalia separately.
