The story of Scott
Scott began as an English surname for someone of Scottish origin. It was a way of marking out a Scot living among the English. The surname later crossed over to become a first name.
Scott first appears in the CSO records in 1970. It grew through the 1980s and 1990s and was among the top 100 boys’ names for many years. It peaked in 2004, with 168 babies, when it reached number 42. Its best year in Northern Ireland was also 2004, when it was number 36.
Like many short names of that era it has eased off since. In 2025, 24 boys were named Scott.
