The story of Séamie
Séamie is a pet form of Séamus, the Irish form of James. It works in the same way as Johnny for John or Paddy for Pádraig, taking the name and adding the friendly ending -ie. James goes back through Latin to the Hebrew name Jacob. For generations Séamie was mostly a family nickname for a boy christened Séamus, and it is only lately that parents have started registering it as the name itself.
The name first appears in the CSO records in 2012, and it has grown quickly in the 2020s. In 2025, 30 boys were given the name, its biggest year, putting it at number 161 once spellings are combined. The CSO counts Séamie and Seamie separately, and in 2025 there were 22 with the fada and 8 without, so its official rank is lower, at number 211.
