The story of Seoidín

Seoidín is built from the Irish word seoid, a jewel or gem, with the small ending -ín, so it means “little jewel”. Seoid goes back to the Old Irish sét, a word for a valuable object or treasure.

Like Saoirse and Aoibhinn, it is an everyday Irish word turned into a name, rather than the name of a saint or a figure from legend. That makes it a young name, and it is still rare outside Ireland.

Seoidín first appears in the CSO records in 2007, given to three girls. It grew slowly through the 2010s and had its best year in 2024, when 25 girls were given it and it reached number 181. The CSO counts the spellings with and without the fada separately. Since the CSO began recording fadas in 2018, almost every family has written it Seoidín.
