The story of Siún

Siún is usually treated as a form of Siobhán, the Irish version of Joan. Siobhán came into Irish from the Anglo-Norman Jehane, and goes back through Latin Johanna and Greek to a Hebrew name meaning “God is gracious”. The standard reference books say little about Siún itself, so treat the link as the usual explanation rather than a certainty. The name turns up in the title of the traditional song “Siún Ní Dhuibhir”.

Siún first reached the CSO list in 1982, spelled without the fada, as the CSO recorded no fadas before 2018. Counting both spellings, it was given to 48 girls in 2011 and reached its best rank, number 113, in 2022. By 2025 every family used the fada: all 34 girls were spelled Siún. It is rare in Northern Ireland.
