The story of Zoey
Zoey is a spelling of Zoë that shows how the name is said. Zoë comes from the Greek word zōē, meaning life. The two dots in Zoë are there to show that the final e is sounded, and the -ey ending does the same job without them.
The CSO counts each spelling separately, so Zoe and Zoey have their own figures. Zoey turned up in the CSO lists in a few years around 1990 and became a regular choice from the mid-2000s. In 2016 it had its best year, with 58 girls, when it reached number 97.
It is much rarer in Northern Ireland, where its best place was number 178 in 2023.
