The story of Adelina
Adelina is the Italian form of Adeline. Like Adeline, Adele and Adelaide, it goes back to the old Germanic word adal, meaning noble, a root that still survives in the German words Adel (nobility) and edel (noble). The long ending -ina gives it a softer, more southern sound than the French-style Adeline, and it shares a family with Ada, Adela and Adelyn.
It is a recent arrival on the Irish lists. Adelina first appears in the CSO records in 2004, and for some years only a few girls a year were given it. It has grown steadily since, and 2025 was its best year yet, with 17 girls. That put it at number 249.
