The story of Elsie
Elsie began in Scotland as a pet form of Elspeth, the Scots version of Elizabeth. It has also been used for Alison and Alice. Elizabeth goes back to the Hebrew Elisheba, usually explained as “my God is an oath”.
Elsie became a name in its own right in the 1800s and was at its most popular around the turn of the twentieth century. Like many names from that time, it has come back.
In Ireland, Elsie was given to four girls in 1964 and then almost vanished from the list for decades. It has climbed steadily since 2010. In 2025, its best year so far, 88 girls were named Elsie and it reached number 55. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was 23rd in 2025, its highest place there.
