The story of Amelie

Amélie is the French form of Amalia, a name that goes back to the early Germanic peoples. Amalia is usually explained through a Germanic word element meaning “work”, though the details are not certain. Amelia comes from the same root.

The French film Amélie, released in 2001, made the name widely known in Ireland and Britain. Amelie first appears in the CSO records in 2002, the year after the film came out.

It grew quickly through the 2000s. Its best year was 2012, when 68 girls were named Amelie and it reached number 93. The CSO counts Amelie and Amélie separately, and the accent was only recorded from 2018. In 2025 there were 12 girls called Amelie and 4 called Amélie, 16 in all, which puts the name at number 267 once the spellings are combined.
