The story of Amelia
Amelia is a form of Amalia, which comes from Germanic names that began with amal. That word is usually explained as vigour, bravery or hard work. From early on Amelia was confused with Emilia, the Latin name behind Emily, and the two have been tangled together ever since.
Amelia was already given in Ireland in 1964, but for decades it was rare, usually to fewer than ten girls a year. It took off after 2004 and jumped to number 12 in 2012. Its biggest year was 2013, with 429 girls, and its best rank was number 3 in 2017.
The CSO counts the spelling Amélia separately, which is why its official rank in 2025 was 12th, while all spellings together put it 11th. In Northern Ireland it reached fourth place in 2012.
