The story of Amir
Amir comes from the Arabic word amir, meaning a commander or prince. The same word gave English “emir”, a title for a ruler, and it is also linked with “admiral”, which began as a borrowing of an Arabic title for a commander. Amira is the matching girls’ name.
The name is used in many languages and cultures, not only in the Arabic-speaking world, and it is also spelled Ameer and Emir.
Amir first reached the CSO list in 1983, but it only became a regular name in Ireland from the mid-2000s. It has grown steadily since, and its best year so far is 2025, when 18 boys were named Amir and it was number 247 overall. In Northern Ireland its highest place was 256th, in 2024.
