Omar is the usual English spelling of the Arabic name Umar. It comes from an Arabic root to do with life and living, and is often explained along those lines, though exact meanings given for it vary. Its best-known bearer is Umar ibn al-Khattab, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad and the second caliph of Islam.
The name is found wherever Arabic names are used, and in many spellings, including Umar and the Turkish Ömer. In English-speaking countries Omar is the most familiar form, known from the actor Omar Sharif.
Omar first appears in the CSO records in 1976. It has grown slowly since the 2000s, and its best year was 2022, with 21 boys and a place at number 227. In 2025, 20 boys were named Omar. Umar is counted separately.
