The story of Anastasia
Anastasia comes from the Greek word anastasis, “resurrection”. In the early centuries of Christianity it was given to children born around Easter, along with the boys’ form Anastasius. It was also the name of a fourth-century martyr, which helped spread it across the Christian world.
It became especially common in eastern Europe, and it is well known through Grand Duchess Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last Russian tsar.
In Ireland, Anastasia was already on the list in 1964, when 40 girls were given it, its best year in the records. It then grew rare through the 1980s and 1990s before a modest return from the 2000s. In 2025 it was given to 16 girls and stood at number 267.
