The story of Alice
Alice came into English in the Middle Ages from Old French Alis, a shortened form of the Germanic name Adalheid, which also gave us Adelaide. Adalheid is usually explained as “noble kind”, from old words for noble and for character. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, published in 1865, made the name familiar to children everywhere.
Alice has been given in Ireland throughout the CSO records. In 1964 it was number 57, and after a quieter spell it came back strongly in the 2010s. In 2022 it was number 29 in the official CSO list. Its busiest year was 2016, with 181 babies.
In Northern Ireland its best position was 35th, in 2019.
