The story of Andrei
Andrei is the Romanian and Slavic form of Andreas, the Greek name that gives English Andrew. It comes from andreios, manly, built on anēr, a man. Saint Andrew the Apostle is honoured across the Orthodox world, which helped make Andrei a common name in Russia, Romania, Moldova, Belarus and beyond.
Its bearers include the Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky, the physicist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Andrei Sakharov, and the icon painter Andrei Rublev.
Andrei first reached the Irish list in 1998. Its best year was 2022, with 20 boys, placing it at number 233. In 2025 it fell below the three babies the CSO needs to list a name. The CSO counts other spellings, such as Andrej, separately. It is still very rare in Northern Ireland.
