The story of Tadgh
Tadgh is a variant spelling of Tadhg, the Irish name that goes back to the Old Irish Tadg. In the standard spelling the “dh” comes before the final “g”, and the “dh” is silent. Tadgh swaps the last letters around, a pattern not found in standard Irish spelling, but it is said the same way and many families choose it.
Tadhg is traditionally explained as “poet” or “philosopher”. It was the name of many Gaelic kings from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries, especially in Connacht and Munster, and it is still most common in Cork and Kerry.
Tadgh first reached the Irish list in 1969. Its best year was 2022, with 69 boys and number 92. The CSO counts Tadgh and Tadhg as separate names, and Tadhg itself is far more popular, sitting in the top ten in recent years.
