The story of Annabelle

Annabelle is a spelling of the older name Annabel. Most people hear it as two parts: Anna, a name that goes back to a Hebrew word for grace, and the French belle, meaning beautiful. That reading is a popular one rather than the proven history of Annabel, whose deeper origin is less clear, but it has shaped how the name is spelled and used.

In Ireland it first appears in the CSO records in 1979, with 3 girls. It stayed very rare until around 2010, then climbed fast. It peaked in 2015, when 76 girls were named Annabelle and it reached number 86. Since then it has fallen back, and in 2025 it was number 304.

The story in Northern Ireland is much the same, with a best rank of number 81 in 2014. The CSO counts Annabelle, Annabel and other spellings separately.
