The story of Annie
Annie is a pet form of Ann or Anne, and it is used for Anna and similar names too. Ann goes back through Latin and Greek to the Hebrew Hannah, from a word meaning grace or favour. The name spread in Christian Europe through Saint Anne, whom tradition names as the mother of the Virgin Mary.
Annie was a popular name in the nineteenth century, and the old Scottish song Annie Laurie kept it familiar.
In Ireland 49 girls were named Annie in 1964. It dipped over the following decades and then began a long climb. In 2025 it reached number 33, its best rank, with 127 babies. It is more popular still in Northern Ireland, where it was 7th in 2025.
