The story of Bláithín
Bláithín is made from the Irish word bláth, a flower or blossom, with the small ending -ín. Put together they give “little flower”. It sits in the same family as Bláthnaid, another Irish name built on bláth.
A well-known early bearer was not a baby girl at all. The English scholar Robin Flower, who translated Irish writing and first visited the Blasket Islands in 1910, was given the nickname Bláithín by the islanders, as a play on his surname.
The name was already being given in small numbers when the CSO records begin. It has grown steadily in recent years, and 2025 was its best year yet, with 42 girls and a combined rank of number 111. The CSO counts the spellings separately, and Bláithín on its own was number 118 in 2025. Its rank in Northern Ireland was also its best that year.
