The story of Aoibhe
Aoibhe is a form of Aoife, the Old Irish name Aífe. It is often linked to the word aoibh, meaning beauty or radiance, but that link is not certain. Aoibhe keeps the “bh” of aoibh in its spelling, so it is said with a “v” where Aoife has an “f”.
Aoife is a famous name in Irish legend, and Aoibhe shares that background. It is also close in sound to Éabha, the Irish form of Eve, which is a different name.
Aoibhe first appears in the CSO records in 1995. It rose fast, reaching number 55 in 2006, and its biggest year was 2008, with 127 girls. It has become less common since, with 13 girls in 2025. In Northern Ireland its best rank was number 103 in 2017.
