Aoibhín

Aoibhín is an Irish name. It is usually explained as coming from aoibh, a word for beauty or a pleasant, smiling look, with the small, affectionate ending -ín. That gives a meaning along the lines of “little beauty”, though the name is not well documented in the older sources and that reading is the common explanation rather than a certain one. The word aoibh goes back to Old Irish and is related to aoibhinn, delightful, and to aoibhneas, delight.

The CSO recorded no fadas before 2018, so until then every Aoibhín was counted as Aoibhin. With both spellings combined, the name first reached the CSO list in 1973 and grew through the 1990s and 2000s. The most babies came in 2017, with 94 girls, and its best rank so far is number 62 in 2025. That year all 82 babies were registered with the fada. It is much rarer in Northern Ireland, where its best place was 134th in 2024.
