The story of Arianna
Arianna is the Italian form of Ariadne, from the Ancient Greek. Ariadne is usually explained as “most holy”, though the meaning is not certain. The shorter Ariana is a close cousin, and both are now used well beyond Italy.
In Greek myth Ariadne was a princess of Crete. She fell for the hero Theseus and gave him a ball of thread, so that he could find his way back out of the labyrinth once he had killed the Minotaur.
Arianna first appears in the CSO records in 1995. It grew through the 2000s and had its best year in 2017, with 30 girls in 2017 and a place at number 172. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 130 in 2018. The CSO counts Arianna and Ariana as separate names.
