The story of Beauden
Beauden is a modern name, and no reliable source explains where it comes from. It looks as if it may be built on Beau, the French word for handsome, but that is only a guess.
The best-known Beauden is Beauden Barrett, the New Zealand rugby player, who was born in 1991 and first played for the All Blacks against Ireland in 2012. He was named World Rugby Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017. He also has a small Irish link: he spent a year in County Meath as a boy and went to the local national school.
In Ireland Beauden first appears in the CSO records in 2018, soon after his two awards. It has been given every year since, and its best year was 2024, with 22 boys and a place at number 213. In 2025, 15 boys were named Beauden. It has also reached Northern Ireland, where 6 boys were given the name in 2025.
