The story of Luna
Luna is simply the Latin word for the moon. In Roman religion the moon was also a goddess of that name, matched with Selene in Greek myth, and English writers long used Luna as a poetic name for the moon.
The best-known Luna in fiction is Luna Lovegood, the dreamy Ravenclaw student in the Harry Potter books.
In Ireland Luna first reached the CSO list in 2003 and stayed rare for another decade. It rose fast from 2016 and had its best year in 2025, with 64 girls and a combined rank of number 81. The CSO counts Luna and Lúna separately: that year 60 girls were registered as Luna and 4 as Lúna. The name is less common in Northern Ireland, where it ranked 177th in 2025.
