The story of Bríd
Bríd is the modern Irish form of Brigit, the name also written Brigid, Brighid and Bridget. It comes from an old Celtic word meaning high or exalted. Before it was a saint’s name it belonged to a goddess: in Irish myth Brigid is a daughter of the Dagda and one of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
St Brigid of Kildare, who lived from around 451 to 525, founded a monastery at Kildare with communities of both women and men. She is one of Ireland’s three national saints, with Patrick and Colm Cille. Her feast day is 1 February, when crosses are woven from rushes and hung for protection, and since 2023 St Brigid’s Day has been a public holiday.
Bríd was a steady choice in Ireland for decades. Its best year came in 1980, when it reached number 131. The CSO printed no fadas before 2018, so the older figures are for Brid. In 2025, 10 girls were named Bríd.
