The story of Peadar
Peadar is the Irish form of Peter. It came into Irish through the Latin Petrus, from the Greek petros, stone or rock, and it is also the Irish name of the apostle Peter. Scottish Gaelic uses the same spelling.
Peadar Kearney wrote the words of “The Soldier’s Song”, which became the Irish national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann. The Donegal writer and activist Peadar O’Donnell is another well-known bearer.
Peadar has never been a common name in Ireland, but it has grown in recent years. The most boys named Peadar in one year was 21, in 2021, and in 2025 there were 20. That year it was number 232 on the CSO list. It is doing better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 126 in 2025, its highest place there.
