The story of Cody
Cody began as an Irish surname, and it has more than one source. In some families it is an English form of Ó Cuidighthigh, “descendant of Cuidightheach”, a byname meaning helpful. In others it comes from Mac Óda, “son of Odo”. Cuddihy and Coady are other English forms of the same surnames.
Its best-known bearer is the American showman William Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill, and a town in Wyoming is named after him. The surname later came into use as a first name, mostly for boys.
In Ireland Cody first reached the CSO list in 1991. Its busiest year was 2009, with 70 boys. Its best rank came later, at number 88 in 2024 on the official CSO ranking. A small number of girls were also named Cody in the 1990s and 2000s. In Northern Ireland it reached its highest place so far in 2025, at 77th.
