The story of Diana
Diana was a Roman goddess of the hunt, wild animals and the moon. Her name goes back to an old Latin word meaning divine or heavenly. The Romans matched her with the Greek goddess Artemis, and in the stories she is the twin sister of Apollo.
It was already in use as an English first name by around 1600, when classical names were in fashion. In the twentieth century it was best known through Diana, Princess of Wales, who married in 1981 and died in 1997.
In Ireland Diana has been given throughout the CSO records at a small, steady level. The most babies in one year was in 1981, when 34 girls were named Diana. Its best rank came later, when it reached number 162 in 2002. In 2025, 17 girls were given the name.
