The story of Sara
Sara is a spelling of Sarah, the form found in Latin and in many European languages. The name goes back to Hebrew and is usually explained as “princess” or “lady”. In the Bible Sarah is the wife of Abraham, and she is honoured by Jews, Christians and Muslims.
In English, Sara is simply another spelling, and most people say it just like Sarah. It is the usual spelling in Italian, Spanish, the Scandinavian languages and more, which is one reason it is familiar across Europe.
Sara has been given in Ireland throughout the CSO records, always some way behind Sarah, which the CSO counts separately. Its best year was 2011, when 91 girls were named Sara and it reached number 78. In Northern Ireland its best rank was 73rd, in 2008. In 2025, 37 girls were named Sara.
