Eden is the name of the garden in the Book of Genesis, the first home of Adam and Eve. The Hebrew word is usually explained as “delight”, and it may go back to a Sumerian word for a plain or steppe. Eden is also an English surname, from an Old English name built on ēad (riches), and in medieval Yorkshire it was a pet form of Edith.
In Ireland it is given to both girls and boys, though more often to girls.
Girls named Eden peaked in 2019, with 23 babies, and the name reached number 199 in 2025 on the combined list, its best rank so far. For boys, the best year was 2020, with 14 babies. Eden is much more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was number 52 in 2025, with 36 girls.
