The story of Maisie

Maisie started out in Scotland as a pet form of Margaret. It was built from May, itself an old nickname for Margaret, with the ending -sie. Margaret goes back through French and Latin to the Greek word for a pearl, and it spread through Europe with the fame of the early saint Margaret the Virgin. The name is also spelt Maisy and in other small variations. Daisy is another pet name that grew out of Margaret, which is one reason the two sit so well together.

In Ireland Maisie is a new arrival. It first reached the CSO list in 2000 and rose quickly through the 2010s. It reached number 49 in 2025, a year after its biggest count, 105 girls in 2024.

It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it climbed as high as 20th in 2023.
