The story of Fiachra
Fiachra is an ancient Irish name. It comes from the Old Irish Fíachrai, and before that from a Primitive Irish form found on ogham stones. Scholars trace it to a Celtic name usually reconstructed as “fighting king”. It also gave rise to the surname Ó Fiachra.
In legend Fiachra is one of the four Children of Lir, with his sister Fionnuala and his brothers Aodh and Conn, who were turned into swans. In history the best-known bearer is Saint Fiachra, an Irish monk who settled in France in the seventh century. There he is known as Saint Fiacre and is the patron saint of gardeners.
Fiachra has been given in Ireland every year since 1969, never in large numbers. It had its best year in 2024, with 45 boys, when it reached number 124. It was given to the same number in 2025, when Fiachra on its own was ranked 121st by the CSO. In Northern Ireland its best rank was 115th, in 2022.
