Indie

Indie is a recent name, and none of the references we checked gives it a settled origin. It may have begun as a short form of names such as India or Indiana. It also shares its sound with indie, the everyday word for independent music, film and games. Any single meaning should be treated with caution.

What is clear is that it is a new name. It has no saint, legend or long history behind it, and the Irish records show it only as a girls’ name.

Indie first reached the CSO list in 2010, when just three girls were given it. It rose quickly through the 2010s and had its best year in 2021, when 74 girls got the name and it reached number 77 on the combined count. It is less common in Northern Ireland, where its best place so far was 126th, in 2023.
