The story of Fiadh
Fiadh comes from the Old Irish fíad, a word for wild animals and deer, and is often explained as “wild”. It is a new name rather than a revived old one: it first appears in the CSO records in 2002.
Its rise was fast. It was the most popular girls’ name in Ireland in 2020 once spellings are combined, and it is still at the top of the list. In 2025 the CSO ranks Fiadh third, but that counts Fiadh (273 babies) and Fíadh (79) separately. Together they make 355, more than any other girls’ name that year.
