Jax is a modern name, usually taken as a short form of Jackson or its spelling Jaxon. Jackson began as an English surname meaning “son of Jack”, and Jack is an old pet form of John. Jax can also be a playful spelling of the surname Jacks.
Jax first appears in the CSO records in 2019, so it is one of the newest names on the Irish list. Its biggest year so far was 2023, with 16 boys, when it reached number 262, and 16 boys were named Jax again in 2025.
It is better known in Northern Ireland, where it came onto the list earlier and ranks higher. There, 20 boys were named Jax in 2025, putting it at number 114. The CSO counts Jax, Jaxon and Jaxson as separate names.
