The story of Joni
Joni is usually a pet form of Joan, the old feminine form of John. John goes back to a Hebrew name meaning “God is gracious”. In English Joni sounds the same as Joanie. In Finland Joni is a separate boys’ name, a form of John, which is why the name turns up for both sexes around the world.
Its best-known bearer is the Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, who was born Roberta Joan Anderson and took Joni from her middle name. For many parents the name carries a folk-music feel from her.
In Ireland Joni first appears in the CSO records in 2001. It has grown slowly since, with 14 girls in both 2021 and 2025. Its best rank so far was number 298 in 2025, combined.
