The story of Juliette
Juliette is a French name, made from Julie with the small ending -ette. Julie is the French form of Julia, the feminine of Julius, the name of an old Roman family. The meaning of Julius itself is uncertain.
In French, Shakespeare’s heroine in Romeo and Juliet is called Juliette, so for many people the name carries a hint of the play. In English the same character gave rise to the shorter spelling Juliet.
Juliette was given to a few Irish girls in most years of the CSO records, but it only became a regular choice in the 2000s. The most girls in a single year was 37 in 2010, and its best rank was number 156 in 2016. In 2025, 15 girls were named Juliette. The CSO counts Juliet as a separate name.
