Keegan is an English form of the Irish surname Mac Aodhagáin, meaning “son of Aodhagán”. Aodhagán is a pet form built on Aodh, one of the oldest Irish men’s names and the root of Aidan. Egan is another English form of the same family name.
Like Brady or Kennedy, it has moved from surname to first name. In North America it is given mostly to boys, with some use for girls too.
In Ireland Keegan first appears in the CSO records in 2007. It rose through the 2010s and reached its best year in 2020, with 33 boys and a place at number 167. It has been given less often since, with 11 boys in 2025.
