The story of Lucie

Lucie is the French and Czech form of Lucia, the name that also gives us Lucy. Lucia was a Roman name, and it is usually linked to the Latin lux, meaning light. St Lucy of Syracuse, an early martyr, spread it across Europe.

In English-speaking countries Lucie is mostly seen as another spelling of Lucy, and it is usually said the same way.

Lucie first appears in the CSO records in 1980. Its best year was 2010, with 38 babies and a rank of number 164. It has done even better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 71 in 2010, and eight girls were named Lucie there in 2025. The CSO counts Lucie, Lucy and Lucia as separate names, and Lucy is by far the most common of the three.
